The Kilbrin Junior hurlers travelled to Buttevant on Saturday last to take on Newtownshandrum in the quarter final of the county championship. It was expected that it would be a tough encounter for Kilbrin and it proved to be the case, Kilbrin were already dealt a blow during the week when Liam Daly suffered a knee injury which rules him our for the greater part of a year. Kilbrin started well and it was score for score in the first quarter of an hour, Newtown then took control of the game and were comfortably in front at half time leading by 1-10 to Kilbrin's 0-4. Kilbrin needed to up their game in the second half if they were to be in with a shout at the final whistle and the did not let their huge following down. The lads responded well and within a short space of time had the lead pegged back to two points thanks to scores from Shane Crowley point and goals from Kieran Sheahan and Noel O' Callaghan. It was touch and go in the closing stages of the game with Newtown holding on to the lead but Kilbrin never threw in the towel and with William Egan in total command with his superb play and coolness punishing Newtown with some excellent scores. Under severe pressure to deliver the goods from placed balls, one to draw level and more importantly with the last puck of the game to send Kilbrin into the semi final. There was full belief from the supporters that this was Kilbrin's day and William did not disappoint, from 80 yards out he expertly and confidently split the post to send Kilbrin into the semi final.
